Our Vision

EAL students arrive at CORE Education Trust with rich linguistic and cultural backgrounds that strengthen our school communities. We believe that language is the gateway to the curriculum, and the curriculum is the gateway to belonging.

Our vision is that every EAL student at CORE:

  • Accesses a full, ambitious curriculum from day one
  • Develops academic language alongside the social English needed to thrive in school life
  • Leaves secondary education confident, articulate and fully prepared for post-16 study
  • Takes pride in their home language(s), culture and identity
  • Becomes an independent, resilient and ambitious young person

Our Beliefs

  • We hold high expectations for every student
  • We recognise that language learning is subject learning
  • Phonics, handwriting and disciplinary vocabulary are taught explicitly and systematically
  • Assessment is formative, frequent and responsive
  • Every student has a clear, planned pathway towards full access to the mainstream curriculum

Our Commitment

CORE Education Trust is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and aspirational learning environment where every EAL student can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

We nurture a strong sense of belonging and celebrate the diversity of languages, cultures and experiences across our schools. Every student is supported to feel valued, confident and motivated to succeed both in school and beyond.

CORE Hello

A Specialist EAL Provision

CORE Hello is a high-quality, intensive programme designed to accelerate English language acquisition and support students in accessing the full curriculum. Led by specialist teachers, the programme ensures that students are equipped to thrive in mainstream lessons as quickly as possible.

The provision follows a graduated approach, ensuring that every student receives a personalised pathway tailored to their stage of English development:

  • Students who are new to English (Proficiency A) access a centralised provision at City Academy
  • Students at early stages of acquisition (Proficiency B) are supported within their school through targeted intervention alongside increasing participation in mainstream lessons

Curriculum and Teaching Approach

CORE Hello is informed by the Bell Foundation’s Five Principles and aligned with the National Curriculum, ensuring a rigorous and research-informed approach to EAL pedagogy.

Students develop skills across listening, speaking, reading and writing, supported by:

  • Explicit teaching of language structures and vocabulary
  • Use of bilingual resources and interpreting technology
  • Encouragement of first language use to support understanding and expression

A Structured Learning Journey

Phase One: Foundations of Literacy
• Daily English with a focus on reading
• Phonics, handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation
• Daily mathematics teaching
• Weekly PSHE
Phase Two: Language for the Curriculum
• Explicit teaching of disciplinary language across subjects including science, humanities, arts and PE
• Continued daily focus on reading and rich texts
• Ongoing mathematics and PSHE
This structured approach ensures that students are both linguistically supported and cognitively challenged, enabling rapid and sustained progress.
Assessment is carried out using the Bell Foundation EAL Assessment Framework.

Beyond the Classroom

CORE Hello places strong emphasis on social integration and cultural capital. Alongside the academic programme, students benefit from opportunities to explore their local environment (Including Supermarkets, Train Stations and Libraries) and build confidence within the wider community.

As part of the PSHE curriculum, Students visit local cultural and historical landmarks such as:

  • Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
  • The Library of Birmingham
  • Dudley Castle and Zoological Gardens
  • The Black Country Living Museum

“I was so excited to get off the plane at Heathrow and to see London for the first time. I remember we went to the Tower of London on our second day, and it was incredible.”

Tanveer, aged 15, year 11

“I was happy to start at Arena but it was quite hard because I couldn’t really speak English properly. People tried to help me but I found lessons difficult and I couldn’t understand my teachers. I was a bit sad too, because it wasn’t easy for me to make friends then.”

Tanveer, aged 15, year 11

“CORE Hello was really brilliant. The teachers helped me learn English, so I could keep up in class and understand my homework. As well as listening, they also taught me how to communicate – I became more confident in speaking English, which meant I could make friends.”

Tanveer, aged 15, year 11

“It was still a little hard when I got back from CORE Hello but my English is getting better all the time. I am happier and I am getting ready for my GCSEs. I want to go to college and be an Electrical Engineer when I am older. Now, I try to help other students at CORE Hello to settle in at Arena and their life in Birmingham.”

Mouhamed, 14, Year 10

Mouhamed came from Italy to live in Birmingham with his family at the start of secondary school. Though he had learned a little English at school in Italy, he struggled to keep up with the pace in lessons and lacked confidence in his spoken English. Mouhamed joined CORE Hello at Easter of year 7.

Because of his underlying knowledge of English, Mouhamed made quick progress and was able to return to Arena Academy after just eight weeks.

“I had basic English, that we had been taught in school, so I knew words and some phrases. But this was not enough to keep up in class and I felt I was getting behind. It was not the subjects I found hard – for example, in maths, when it was just numbers, I was fine. But the teacher’s explanations in other lessons were just too fast, and the written material too complicated for me to properly understand.”

Mouhamed, 14, Year 10

“CORE Hello was really helpful, the teachers broke everything down into small sections, so I could understand it. They went at my speed and did not move on to the next thing until I was really ready. I caught up quickly and I also found it much easier to communicate with other people.”

Mouhamed, 14, Year 10

“CORE Hello was life changing. I feel completely at ease with English now, I can understand everything and I have no issues at school or with my friends. I can enjoy clubs, like the CCF, and I am looking forward to the future – when I hope to study business and data.”

Tanveer, aged 15, year 11

Tanveer came to Birmingham with his parents and younger sister in November 2022. He had never been to the UK before and was extremely excited. The family settled in Birmingham and Tanveer joined Arena Academy. After the Christmas holiday, in January 2023, Tanveer went to CORE Hello. Tanveer has been back at Arena since Easter 2023.
